The history of Mali Lošinj and the beginning of tourism
The first written records take us back to the distant year of 1398, when the first settlement was established at the site of today’s Mali Lošinj. In the mid-19th century, the island and the town experienced prosperity, especially through developed trade and shipbuilding. Mali Lošinj then had the most developed trading fleet and was the most important port on the Adriatic Sea, aside from Trieste. The islanders were known for their maritime skills and shipbuilding. The city center still retains its appearance from that period.
